2003 Honda Element's engine light came on and the car is acting jerky. What do you suppose is the problem?

Probably an emissions problem. Call your local auto parts chain store (Pep Boys, Auto Zone, etc., not Earl's Car Parts) ask as them if they do free code reading (many of the national chain stores do). They will tell you what the check engine light is trying to tell you and what needs to be done.
